Great Golden Digger wasp

A very large wasp seen at the Garden in the Woods Park in Framingham Massachusetts last September.
See this and many other bugs and buds on my DailyPics photo site.

Hi! I'm trying to identify the wasps that love to nest in the stone dust of my back patio. The picture looks about right... but I describe their flying as more hovering. And, they are terrifying! We're north of Boston. What do you think - is it your great golden digger?

sra. a picture would help but blogs don't allow that, that's why I started my DailyPics photo site.
I get my bugs ID'ed at http://bugguide.net/ Go there, do a search for this bug, click the info tab to learn all about it. Sign up and search the Wasp files or post a pic in the ID Request forum. I'm Andy P there as well.
Good luck.
